Transforming Phoenix Parks: An Urban Renewal Story
In an ambitious effort to combat the scorching summer temperatures affecting its communities, Project EverGreen, in collaboration with ScottsMiracle-Gro, recently kicked off the second phase of a significant renovation at Barrios Unidos Park located in Phoenix. This community-focused initiative aims to create essential green spaces that not only enhance the aesthetics of the area but also contribute to environmental wellness.
The Importance of Green Spaces
For residents in urban settings, parks are vital. They serve as the lungs of the city, provide recreational opportunities, and help curb the urban heat island effect that many cities, particularly Phoenix, experience. The park's first phase, completed in fall 2024, included the planting of 50 mature trees and improvements to the irrigation system. These trees can sequester more than 250,000 pounds of carbon annually and improve local air quality, effectively reducing the equivalent emissions of about 32 cars every year.
Community Engagement and Environmental Impact
This second phase, which wrapped up on May 14, 2025, is equally transformative. By revitalizing the park's softball field, the initiative assures safe and inviting spaces where the community can gather, play, and connect. The establishment of native plants, coupled with drought-tolerant grasses, emphasizes both beautification and sustainability. As explained by Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen, “Green spaces are essential infrastructure that promote public health and stronger communities.”
